eBay Will Store Personal Data Of Russian Users In Russia
April 8, 2015 14:39

The US company eBay owning the eponymous website for online auctions and PayPal payment service agreed to begin processing and storage of personal data of its Russian users on the servers in Russia, as the “Kommersant” newspaper writes.

According to the source of the newspaper, last week the representatives of eBay and PayPal discussed the question of transferring data from Switzerland to Russia with the Deputy Head of the Federal Supervision Agency for Information Technologies and Communications Antonina Priezzheva. The company plans to do this by September 1, when the law on the storage of personal data of Russians comes into legal force. The fact of the meeting was confirmed by the Head of the Russian representation of eBay Vladimir Dolgov, who explained that eBay wanted to “get answers to some questions”.

Dolgov did not specify what amount data was to be transfered and how the processes of transfer and further work would be organized. Earlier PayPal, obeying the US sanctions, blocked the accounts of users from the Crimea, however, according to the  source of “Kommersant”, this issue was not discussed during the meeting.

PayPal allows any business or individual with an email address to securely, conveniently and cost-effectively send and receive payments online. The network builds on the existing financial infrastructure of bank accounts and credit cards to create a global, real-time payment solution. It delivers a product ideally suited for small businesses, online merchants, individuals and others currently underserved by traditional payment mechanisms. The size of the network and widening acceptance of our product have helped us become one of the leading payment networks for online auction websites, including eBay. PayPal is also being increasingly used on other ecommerce sites for the sale of goods such as electronics and household items, the sale of services such as web design and travel, and the sale of digital content. Offline businesses, including lawyers, contractors and doctors, have increasingly begun to receive payments online through PayPal. PayPal's service, which lets users send payments for free, can be used from computers or web-enabled mobile phones.
