It was decided to extend the EU sanctions against the Crimea and Sevastopol for a year - until June 23, 2016. This was reported in a communiqué published on the website of the EU Council.

It is noted that the restrictions are imposed on the import of products produced on the peninsula into the EU, on investments of the European companies in the Crimea and Sevastopol, on the tourist services and export of certain goods and technologies to the Crimea (in particular, in such sectors as transportation, telecommunications, energy). Earlier a source of RIA “Novosti” told that the sanctions against the Crimea and Sevastopol would be extended.

On June 18 the Russian mass media reported that these restrictions would be extended without a discussion at a meeting of the EU Council at the level of Ministers of Economy and Finance, also referring to a diplomatic source. According to the source, this decision was a part of the EU strategy, which includes denial of the legitimate annexation of the Crimea to Russia.

The decisions on the sanctions are usually taken at the level of foreign ministers of the EU member countries, but if technical issues have already been agreed upon by all countries, they can be approved at a meeting of any sectoral ministers of the 28 countries of the European Union.
