The representative office of the Spanish BBVA bank in the United Kingdom blocked the payment to the RT channel (Russia Today) because of personal sanctions against the General Director of IIA “Russia Today” Dmitry Kiselev. This was reported in the press release of RT received by

The local representative office explained the inability of the BBVA bank to transfer the funds obtained by the RT channel from the sale of advertisement by the fact that the name of Kiselev was included into the sanctions list of the European Union and that the provision of the information about an organization or a structure associated with him or acting in his interests could violate the resolution on sanctions.

“We feel extremely indignant at the illegal blocking of the payment to RT in the United Kingdom” - the Chief Editor of Russia Today Margarita Simonyan stated.

“First, the account of the IIA “Russia Today” was arrested in London, despite the fact that the Agency is not under the EU sanctions and the account of the agency does not belong to Dmitry Kiselev. Now another bank having no slightest grounds refuses to transfer the money legally earned by RT”. She added that Kiselev was the General Director of the IIA “Russia Today” and had no relation to the RT channel.

“They could as well block all the accounts with the titles containing the words “Russia” or “Today” – Simonyan said. On August 29, 2015 the Russian Foreign Ministry told that the decision of the Republic of Latvia to refuse to register the local representative office of IIA “Russia Today” was politicized. Earlier the mass media reported that the business register of Latvia refused to record the legal status of IIA due to the fact that “the content of the media contradicted the Constitution of Latvia and the official position of the government”.
