Russia and Egypt have signed an intergovernmental cooperation agreement in Cairo, this agreement involves the construction of the first nuclear power plant in the Arab Republic.
This was reported by the Department of Communications of the “Rosatom” State Corporation, as RIA Novosti reported. The agreement was signed by the General Director of “Rosatom” Sergey Kiriyenko and the Minister of Electricity and Energy of Egypt Mohamed Shaker in the presence of the country’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Kiriyenko stressed that “it was the most important document recording the parameters of the first Egyptian nuclear power plant that will be built by Russian technologies”. In addition, the parties signed an intergovernmental agreement on the joint work of the supervisory departments of the two countries in the field of nuclear energy.
According to the Head of “Rosatom”, these documents contain the issues of provision of the future nuclear power plant with nuclear fuel, the commitments of its operation, maintenance and repair of its power units. The agreements will also regulate the issues of management of spent nuclear fuel, training of the nuclear power plant personnel, aid to Egypt on improving of the regulatory framework of the nuclear energy of this country. The Head of “Rosatom” noted that the first Russian experts were already at the site of El Dabaa where the nuclear power plant would be built.
“The equipment will be delivered, and the exploration works will start in December” – Kiriyenko said. According to him, the parties proceed from the assumption that the project will be implemented over 12 years.
