Nord Stream-2 Construction
February 8, 2016 16:20

The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Sigmar Gabriel stated that Germany would not give its consent to the construction of the “Nord Stream-2” pipeline, if the gas was not guaranteed for the countries of Eastern Europe.

Gabriel urged to take the concerns of Poland regarding the construction of the gas pipeline seriously. On January 18 the President of Poland Andrzej Duda said that “Nord Stream-2” would undermine the cohesion of the EU and was caused by political factors to a much greater extent than economic ones at a joint briefing with the Chairman of the European Council Donald Tusk. “We do not agree with such capital investment” – Dud said.

The project has been criticized primarily by the Eastern European EU member states. At the end of November of last year the Minister of Economy of Slovakia Vazil Hudak noted that the losses of the country from the “Nord Stream-2” would amount to 400 million dollars per year (the state receives money from the transit of Russian gas to Western Europe).

On December 20, 2015 Gabriel noted that Germany was interested in the construction of the “Nord Stream-2” pipeline. He stressed the fact that the project could become economically beneficial not only for Germany, but also for France and other EU member states, but it was necessary to fulfill some “political conditions” for its implementation.
