Russia and Japan are discussing the possibility of building a bridge between the islands of Hokkaido and Sakhalin. This was reported by the Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF-2017) on Wednesday, September 6.

“Is it possible to do this? Yes it is; it’s not even that expensive with modern technologies. And we are seriously discussing this with our Japanese partners” - the official said. Shuvalov noted that the Russian party “was already close to begin performing its part of the work”.

According to him, Moscow will have to bring the railway to the Pacific coast and build a pass from the mainland to Sakhalin. At the end of June the business mission of Japan paid a five-day visit to the Southern Kuril Islands. The mission was headed by the Special Adviser to the Prime Minister of Japan Eiichi Hasegawa.

Back in December 2016, during the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Japan, the leaders of the two countries agreed on a document on the initiation of consultations on joint economic activities on the Southern Kuril Islands.
