Facebook Suspects Russia Of Carrying Out a Campaign During the US Presidential Election
September 16, 2017 18:09

Facebook suspects Russia of carrying out a campaign on increasing political differences during the US presidential election campaign in 2016 in this social network. This is written by Washington Post with a reference to the Chief Security Expert of Facebook Alex Stamos.

According to him, 470 counterfeit accounts were discovered. They were not directly related to elections, candidates or voting process, but they served to place three thousand paid advertisements on the topics ranging from the right to carry weapons to the problems of racial differences from June 2015 to May 2017.

“Our analysts believe that these accounts and pages are linked to each other and are managed from Russia” – Stamos noted. The publication drew attention to the fact that this “campaign” was conducted during the election campaign for the US president.

It is noted that about 100 thousand dollars have been spent on this advertising during a year and a half, which is quite a modest amount. Journalists had doubts about Russia’s involvement, because in the year 2015 Donald Trump was not yet a single candidate from the Republican Party.
