Fitch Upgraded Russia's BBB- Rating

Western sanctions against Russia, even if tightened, will not affect the financial flexibility of the country, the director of the analytical group on sovereign ratings agency Fitch, Eric Arispe, said. "Undoubtedly, they may affect the lower level of growth, but for us it is important that the sanctions do not affect the access of the sovereign to financial markets," he said. Russia has the potential to raise the rating of "BBB-", he noted.

"Russia is the first sovereign that received the Fitch rating, which changes the trend of expectations in the credit cycle, that is, the rating not only stabilized, but also reveals the potential for improvement. This is reflected in a positive outlook," he explained.

On September 22, Fitch upgraded Russia's BBB- rating from stable to positive. This rating corresponds to the lowest level of the investment category.

The same day, the Head of the American Chamber of Commerce in Russia (AmCham), Alexis Rodzianko, said that US sanctions against Russia would last longer than the term of powers of President, Donald Trump. Probably, they will remain in force with the next two or three presidents.
