Russia Delays its Response to the US Sanctions Against Rusal
May 10, 2018 00:05

Russia delays its response to the US sanctions against Rusal, because the country hopes that European leaders will be able to persuade Washington to soften the restrictive measures even further. This is reported by Reuters, with a reference to the sources in the Russian Ministry of Finance.

In particular, we are talking about the visit of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron to the USA. “Now everyone is sitting and waiting, whether Merkel will agree with Trump, whether she will make any exceptions,” as the source said. According to the source, this explains why Russia “is in no hurry” right now. The agency connects the previous softening of sanctions with the positions of Germany and France.

According to the source, Moscow expects Merkel and Macron to agree on restoring Rusal’s access to the European aluminum market. In this case, Oleg Deripaska can regain control of the company.

The Draft Law on the response to the US sanctions is to be considered by the State Duma in the first reading on May 15.
