The Nord Stream-2 can Fall under American Sanctions
May 18, 2018 16:58

The Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline project threatens the energy security of Europe and can fall under American sanctions.

This statement was made by Deputy Assistant Secretary of the USA for Energy Security, Sandra Oudkirk, Bloomberg reports. According to her, the United States fears, among other things, that during the laying of pipeline along the bottom of the Baltic Sea, Russia will be able to install underwater surveillance equipment.

Oudkirk disposed the assumption that Washington opposed the gas pipeline project in an attempt to take the European market of liquefied natural gas.

German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, said in the middle of April that Nord Stream-2 project did not threaten the security of the EU. The authorities of Germany note that the project has an exclusively economic nature, but in Berlin they consider that it is important to preserve gas supplies through the territory of Ukraine.
