The European Council decided to extend sanctions against Russia for another six months. Limitations will affect the financial, energy and defense sectors of the economy.

The European Council decided to extend the economic sanctions against Russia for another six months. This was reported by TASS with reference to the representative of the European Council Barenda Lates.

The validity of the sanctions ends on January 31, 2020. Restrictive measures that affect the financial, energy and defense sectors are expected to be extended until July.

A source in the delegation of one of the countries of the community told TASS that the decision to extend the sanctions was made after German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron briefly informed the rest of the leaders on the implementation of the Minsk settlement agreements in Ukraine in the light of the 9 December in Paris Summit in the "Norman format." “Macron and Merkel very briefly informed about the implementation of the Minsk agreements, after which it was decided to renew the restrictive measures against Moscow,” the source said.

In 2014, the European Union and the United States imposed sanctions against Russia after the annexation of Crimea and because of events in the south-east of Ukraine. Since then, they have repeatedly extended restrictive measures. The last time the sanctions were extended in the summer of 2019.

According to the results of recent negotiations between the leaders of the Norman Four countries, the parties could not come to a resolution to the conflict, however, they agreed to exchange all prisoners and hold a new meeting in the spring of next year.
