A group of professors nominated Navalny for the Nobel Peace Prize, Russian scientist Sergei Erofeev said.
Alexei Navalny was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, Sergei Erofeev, a scientist and professor at Rutgers University in New Jersey, said on his Facebook. According to the scientist, the nomination process was initiated by "a number of professors from recognized universities who are engaged in Russia." He also added that among the supporters of the idea there are those who had a negative attitude towards the activities of the politician, but changed their minds.
In a comment to the Dozhd TV channel, the scientist noted that the idea of nominating Navalny is not new, but in connection with recent events, it has become especially relevant. He did not name the professors who took part in the initiative, but assured that there are "great people" among them.
Navalny became ill on August 20 on a plane from Tomsk to Moscow. The plane urgently landed in Omsk, where the politician was placed in the intensive care unit of an emergency hospital. On August 22, he was evacuated to Germany for treatment at the Charite clinic. Navalny spent more than two weeks in a coma, and more than four weeks on a ventilator.
On September 2, the German government announced that a poison from the Novichok group had been found in the politician's body, and demanded an explanation from Russia.
Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov said that there was no reason to accuse the Russian state of poisoning the politician. He stressed that before Navalny was taken to Berlin, “no toxic substances were detected in his body.”
