The former US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul condemned Facebook for blocking the announcement of the campaign aiming to support the founder of the Russian Foundation for Fighting against Corruption Alesksey Navalny on the territory of Russia.
Last Saturday, December 20, McFaul wrote in his Twitter: “We all make mistakes. Facebook needs to fix its mistakes in Russia as soon as possible. The current actions are a monstrous precedent and are bad for business” - McFaul wrote.
On the evening of December 20 the Facebook community with the announcement of the campaign aiming to support Aleksey Navalny was blocked on the territory of Russia. According to the press secretary of the Federal Supervision Agency for Information Technologies and Communications Vadim Ampelonsky, it was done at the request of the Prosecutor General.
Ampelonsky told to “Dozhd” that the access to the community is restricted in the execution of the Federal Law No. 398 “On information, information technologies and information protection”. By the time of the community’s blocking about 12 thousand people have expressed their willingness to come to support Navalny. It was not reported if an official application for conduction of this campaign would be submitted or not.
On January 15 Zamoskvoretskiy Moscow Court will announce the verdict on “Yves Rocher” case, the defendants being Navalny brothers accused of fraud, Aleksey and Oleg Navalnvy. The Prosecutor’s Office requested to give a nine years’ imprisonment to Alekseyi Navalny (given the suspended sentence in the “Kirovles” case, a total of ten years) and a eight years’ imprisonment to his brother.
