DPR Announced the Completion Of Withdrawal Of Heavy Weapons From the Contact Line
February 28, 2015 10:29

The militiamen from DPR announced the completion of withdrawal of heavy weapons from the contact line on Saturday, February 28.

“The militiamen from DPR brought 21 artillery groups to the rear area during the operation on weapons withdrawal” - the representative of the DPR Eduard Basurin stated. According to him, today this process will be completed, as the news agency of Donetsk reported.

The People’s Militia Corps of the self-proclaimed Lugansk People’s Republic announced the withdrawal of 80% of heavy weapons, according to the Lugansk Information Centre.

The militiamen of LPR plan to complete the process by March 2-3. At the same time, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have withdrawn only 15% of heavy weapons from the positions, as Basurin claims. “According to our intelligence, only about 15% of artillery systems of the total amount stipulated by the agreement have been withdrawn from the positions of the Ukrainian troops until today” - the militiaman said. Basurin pointed out that the weapons of the Ukrainian army is withdrawn without any control of OSCE observers and without a joint centre, not at the specified distances, but to the positions allowing to return weapons to original positions “within one hour”.

In response the press secretary for the military operation headquarters Andrei Lysenko said that Kiev implemented the Minsk agreements in an “exemplary manner”. “The representatives of Ukrainian and foreign media could see this with their own eyes yesterday [on February 27], watching the process of withdrawal of heavy weapons - 100-millimeter guns - from the demarcation line” – Lysenko said at a briefing. He stressed that the process of withdrawal of weapons was held with the participation of the OSCE observation mission, while the militiamen has not yet provided the necessary information on their weapons, routes of their withdrawal and their subsequent whereabouts to international observers.

The mutual withdrawal of heavy weapons from the contact line is provided by a set of measures as of February 12 adopted at the negotiations held in Minsk by the leaders of the “Norman Quartet”. The parties began to withdraw weapons this week. On February 27 the President of Ukraine Petr Poroshenko stated that the military were ready to return heavy weapons to the original positions at any time.
