The Searches In LifeNews
March 25, 2015 13:16

The searches authorized by the Investigative Committee of Russia (ICR) were conducted at the editorial office of the TV channel and website “LifeNews” on Tuesday. As a result, the channel’s hard drives were seized, as the chief editor of LifeNews Anatoly Suleimanov told to RIA “Novosti”.

The human rights organization “Resistance” addressed the ICR with the request to check the editorial office, drawing the attention of the investigators to the publication of the information on two crimes against minors on the website of LifeNews. “The searches in the editorial office of LifeNews Holding may be related to the search of documents on one of the journalist investigations led by the editorial office” – the Head of News Media, including the channel and the eponymous web portal, Aram Gabrelyanov told to TASS during the search.

“The investigators seized servers, no official documents on the case have yet been provided. However, most likely, the case is related to the sexual scandals in schools investigated by the journalists of the holding.” According to the channel statement, the publications that caused complaints of human rights defenders, did not disclose the faces of the minor victims, and their real names were not mentioned in the texts.

The Chief Editor of the channel Anatoly Suleimanov put the version of Gabrelyanov under question. “We are constantly checked by Roskomnadzor, we have received no notification of this department lately. I do not believe that they could come to us for a search on the case investigated by us more than a year ago”- Suleimanov told to “Interfax”. He also noted that, following from the decision produced by the Investigative Committee representatives, they had previously moved the court concerning the seizure of the channels’ documents containing state or other secrets protected by the law of the Russian Federation. Suleimanov found it difficult to suggest what documents or files of the channel could contain state secrets. The inter-regional human rights organization “Resistance” was founded in 2005.

The organization provides free legal and psychological assistance to victims and witnesses in criminal proceedings. One of its founders is the political consultant Olga Kostina, one of the main prosecution witnesses on the cases of former employees of the company “Yukos” Aleksey Pichugin and Leonid Nevzlin. She holds the position of Chairman of the Board in “Resistance”, Kostina is also a Chairman of the Public Council under the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Interior of Russia in Moscow and a member of the Council of the Public Chamber of Russia.

As Kostina later told to TASS, “Resistance” redirected the complaint received by the organization at the end of 2014 to the Investigative Committee. It said that the editorial office, making news about children’s abuse, published the data that can disclose the identity of a minor, which is prohibited by law. She noted that she could not understand the reasons for such a strong reaction on the part of the investigating authorities.
