Valeriy Karpin was assigned the head coach of the Spanish "Mallorca" football club, which represents the administrative capital of the Balearic Islands – Palma de Mallorca. The team plays in country’s second largest league, Segunda. Earlier, Russian specialist headed the Moscow "Spartak".
Information about Valeriy Karpin leaving for "Mallorca" quickly evolved from a banal hearing into official news. A few days ago it was reported that the coach seems to be in talks with the Spanish club about possible employment. After some time, it became known that Karpin is, in fact, the main and the only candidate for the position of “Mallorca" tutor. "Tonight will be held a meeting, where will be discussed the candidacy of the head coach. The question is: will that be Karpin or not? The Russian coach is really the main candidate for this position. I think the decision will be taken on Tuesday, and on Wednesday morning Karpin can be officially declared the head coach of "Mallorca," a source in the Spanish club told ITAR-TASS. The source did not deceive. Around midnight Moscow time the sides made a bargain: Mr. Karpin became the head coach of "Mallorca".
Russian expert will be assisted by Juan Vila and Eduardo Dominguez, who had previously worked with him in "Spartak". Miki Garro will work with goalkeepers. Previous coaching staff headed by Miguel Soler was dismissed. Interestingly that Karpin was brought into contact with "Mallorca" at the beginning of the summer. The coach was even seen at one of the team's matches. But the club then said they did not consider the candidacy of the Russian specialist. "Mallorca" will begin the upcoming season in Segundo, the second major football league in Spain.
According to the results of the 2012/13 season, the team was relegated from Primera, and then inertially almost left the Segundo as well. The team from Palma de Mallorca completed last championship only on 17-th position (out of 22) in the standings, avoiding demotion in class only at the last moment. Apart from the purely sporting issues, "Mallorca" has financial difficulties too.
However, before the start of the new season, the club expects the best. In June, the team's once legendary defender Miguel Angel Nadal became the sporting director of the islanders. A little later, "Mallorca" got a new CEO in the person of former club goalkeeper Dudu Aouate, who hung up his gloves on a nail only at the end of the last season. It was Avat, who carried on negotiations with Karpin, that eventually ended up successfully. As for the coach, we want to believe he will succeed on his new job.
Valeriy is one of the few Russian specialists, who are able to work in Western Europe. As a player Karpin spent 10 years in the Pyrenees, playing for "Real Sociedad", "Valencia" and "Celta". During this time he not only managed to adapt to the life in a new country, but became absolutely one of them. Valeriy perfectly speaks Spanish and has Spanish citizenship. There also lives one of the coache's daughters. The professional previously admitted that he would not mind to work in the country, which became his home. It is hoped that the Russian expert will succeed in the "Mallorca". To some extent, the coach and the club look same. The first one got a new challenge and a chance to prove himself outside of "Spartak", whereas "Mallorca" is thirsty for the return to the elite and is in search of past successes.
