Naryn-Kala Welcomes Tourists
Tourists enter the citadel through the main eastern gate. The place of the current museum ticket office previously was the place of the guards. An impressive three-storey building of khan’s office with parade and service premises is built directly above the gate. The museum of the fortress is located there now.

Naryn-Kala - Citadel Of Ancient Derbent
Naryn-Kala, the citadel of ancient Derbent, stands on the slope of the hill hanging over the city. Two lines of fortifications that once led from the castle to the sea can be seen from the viewing platform. Quarters (mangals) of the old city are sandwiched between the northern and the southern walls. Everything behind the walls is the new city. Derbent began from here, from the citadel of Naryn-Kala.

The oldest and the most southern city in Russia does not look like a museum, although it has enough of museum treasures. Derbent is a live eastern city, and its respectable age didn’t dry it, but only added color to the city. The age of the city is counted even not in centuries - the emergence of the settlements in this place, at the “Caspian Gate” is related to IV millennium BC by the scientists, and the city has existed here since VI century BC.

Dagestan Republic: History Of Derbent
The first settlements appeared on the place of the modern Derbent in the Early Bronze Age - at the end of IV millennium BC. Then this place was called the “Caspian Gate”. The first record of the existence of the Caspian Gate refers to VI century BC, it can be found in the records of the famous Greek geographer Hecataeus of Miletus. The city known as Cholas from ancient and medieval sources was built on the place of the man site in about II century BC.

Derbent is the oldest city in Russia and one of the oldest cities in the world. The celebration of the 2000 anniversary of Derbent will cost more than 1.7 billion roubles, about 1.2 billion of which will be allocated from the federal budget.
