The Solovetsky archipelago (better known as Solovki) is a group of islands located in the White Sea near Murmansk. Many episodes of Russian history are connected with this place. There are some important things to arrange before travelling to Solovki.
Important Things to Know Before Travelling to Solovki
How to get there – the most convenient way
From Moscow and, of course, St. Petersburg there are direct trains to Kemi.
In Kemi, at the station you will have to take a taxi to Rabocheostrovsk - about 300 rubles per trip.
From Rabocheostrovsk you will have to go further by boat, which should be booked in advance.
Some hotels offer a transfer (you need to book in advance).
The best time to travel is the end of June - the first half of July: you will enjoy warm and white nights.

Things to arrange in advance
1. Reserve your accommodation. The Solovki season is short, and there are a lot of people travelling here. When choosing a hotel, do not forget to look at the map – some of them are located in remote areas.
2. Book popular tours. If you want to get to Anzer Island, you need to do this in advance. You can also book an exotic tour to Cape Beluga.
3. Book a boat from Rabocheostrovsk to the islands and back.
4. Ladies should not forget to take long skirts: a monastery and many hermitages oblige women to wear skirts and cover their heads.
5. Do not forget warm and waterproof clothing. The standard Solovki weather is pretty cool and humid.
6. Do not forget repellent. There are many mosquitoes here.
