August 23, 2014 14:56

The Tobolsk Kremlin is located in the upper town on the bank of the Irtysh River. There are over thirty beautiful ancient buildings on its territory. The shopping arcade of XVIII century stands in the very centre of the lower town, the Red Square.

One of the most interesting buildings of the city of Tobolsk - prison fortress – is also situated here. It is an ensemble of five stone buildings that were built in the first half of XIX century and were made in the style of classicism. The house of the governor of XVIII century stands on the other side of the Red Square.

The oldest stone building not only of the Tobolsk Kremlin, but of the entire region is the St. Sophia and Assumption (Sofiysko-Uspenskiy) Cathedral. It was built in the 80s of XVII century. It is neighbored by a two-storey building of the cathedral sacristy which now has the look it had on its completion in 1796.

A beautiful bell tower is located on the southern side of the sacristy, the architecture of the tower is made in the style of classicism. It was built in 1794-97 years. It is the tallest building in the whole Tobolsk. Another ancient temple of the Tobolsk Kremlin is the Winter Intercession (Zimny Pokrovskiy) Cathedral built in 1743-1746.

The remains of St. John and the Metropolitan of Tobolsk are kept here. The Bishop’s house of the 70s of XVIII century is located opposite to the latter. It is famous for being the first civil building made in the style of classicism in the whole Siberia. The lower and upper parts of the city are connected by a staircase of almost two hundred steps - Pryamskoy Vzvoz.

The height of the lift makes up nearly 60 meters. It is topped by the Swedish Chamber - a long rectangular building connecting the smaller town and the Sophia yard of the Kremlin. The Museum of the ancient history of Siberia is located here. The territory of the Kremlin is a part of the State Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve. Its territory has 31 historic buildings featuring more than 300 thousand exhibits. The most interesting of them are the Museum-office of Nicholai II, the Book Museum, the Art Museum. The territory of the Tobolsk Kremlin is open for visitors every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Tuesday - from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Kremlin Museums do not work on Monday. You should remember that the museum ticket offices close one hour before the exhibitions are closed.
