Plan Your Trip To Elton
April 7, 2015 00:02

The climate in the area of the Elton Lake is continental and dry.

The winter is moderately cold, the average temperature in January is -11 C. The summer is hot, the average temperature in July is 25 C, but often it rises even higher. The difference between day and night temperatures may be substantial. Winds are blowing constantly.

According to statistics, there are about 300 windy days a year in these places.

Small dust eddies appear in the steppe on these days. However, there are also many sunny days here, almost as many as on the southern coast of the Crimea.

It is better to come to the Elton Lake in spring, summer or autumn. The balneo-mud resort “Elton” works all year round.

Elton is a huge salt lake on the Russian Caspian lowland. Its area is 152 square kilometers, and its depth - about 0.1 meters (0.7-0.8 meters in spring). The lake is located 18 meters below the sea level.

Elton is considered the largest salt lake in Europe. There are salt sources at the bottom of the lake, as well as deposits of salts and mineral hydrogen sulfide mud.

The lake itself is filled with brine - supersaturated salt solution with a high content of potassium and other macro- and micronutrients. It looks like an oily liquid of golden-pink color, and its taste is bitter-salty.

White salt crystals lie along the shores of the lake.
