Suzdal Shopping Arcade
November 28, 2015 11:45

The Shopping Arcade in Suzdal was built in the period from 1806 to 1811 by the architect Vershinsky.

It is located in the western part of the market square - now it is the Sovetskaya Square. The building of the Shopping Arcade offers a view to the high bank of the Kamenka River. This place has been considered a major centre of social life in Suzdal since ancient times.

People came here not only to buy or sell something, but so to say, to see people and be seen themselves. The height of the long line of the arches of shopping stalls with numerous columns built in a classical style does not exceed six meters. Each arch used to host a shop. A spire of the front gate rises above the shopping stalls.

Today the Shopping Arcade is used for its original purpose – it houses shops and restaurants. However, doorways and windows were provided with bars and heavy doors. There are two churches near the Shopping Arcade: the heated Church of the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan and the cold Church of the Resurrection.

The first cathedral was built in 1739, the second - in 1720. The churches are decorated quite modestly, at the same time a magnificent bell tower stands next to them. Events and festivals. Mass celebrations are traditionally held on the square near the Shopping Arcade. For example, they celebrate the Day of Cucumber (July), the Day of the City (August), the Orthodox Pentecost (late May-early June). Here you can read about other holidays celebrated in Suzdal.
