Admiralty Of St. Petersburg
May 18, 2016 16:45

The first Admiralty was laid in 1704 on the island between the Neva and the Moika (island was named as Admiralty). At first it was a one-story log structure in the shape of the letter U, open in the direction of the Neva River, surrounded by an earthen rampart with five bastions and a deep dith.

From the Neva two channels were dug and the surrounding forest was cut for the view of area. Thus the Admiralty meadow formed and later the Isaac's Palace, Senate Square and Alexander Garden appeared here. Boathouses, docks, workshops and warehouses - all that is needed for the construction and equipping of ships are located in the castle-yard. The weather vane ship and a ball under it (so-called "apple") appeared on Admiralty spire as early as in 1719, when Dutch master Herman van Boles expanded and finished constructing of the first Admiralty. In the years 1727-1738 the architect I.K. Korobov reconstructed the building in stone.
