Khabarovsk Museum of Archaeology
August 19, 2016 00:16

Journey into the past of the Khabarovsk Territory begins in front of the Museum of Archaeology: on the side of the Turgenev street  the stones with copies of ancient rock paintings by Sikachi-Alyan are installed.

Plots are mostly zoomorphic: these animals and birds lived in the Amur region of the late Ice Age. On the other stones the images of people in boats and anthropomorphic masks are carved, the scientists have linked them with shamanic practices.

The Museum of antiquities itself is very young. It was opened in 1998 as a branch of the Khabarovsk regional museum, the basis of its collection became its outstanding collection of Siberian archaeologist A.P.Okladnikov. The museum is housed in the former mansion of Bernard Lübben, the owner of one of the first breweries in Khabarovsk.

The brewery is also preserved, and it is located directly behind the mansion. Today, more than 160 thousand exhibits are collected in the museum. The most valuable is a Paleolithic collection and chzhurdzheney weapons found in the province. It is dry facts, backed by something unexpected and very interesting: experimental archeology. Some archaeological experiments can be carried out by a visitor. Hammer in his or her hands, however, will not be given, but he or she will be offered to create a clay pot or bowl. Without using a potter's wheel according to the ancient technique: strips of clay are adhered to the bottom of the vessel in a circle one after another until the wall will grow to the desired height. Homemade vase in the style of some pyanoborskoy culture can take home with them. Only it is worth considering: to avoid the vessel to be crashed, it should be thoroughly dry and burn in a special oven.
