Sochi Ecotourism: the Psaho Trail

The Psaho Trail is a route along the canyons of the Psaho River that will captivate you with spectacular views. Until recently, this place was completely hidden from  eyes, but the Sochi National Park turned the river into a recreational zone. Now everyone can relax and enjoy nature - clear bluish waters, fabulous gorges and boxwood groves.

The dry and wet canyons of the Psaho River annually attract crowds of tourists and adventure lovers. The nature of these places is reserved, so the landscapes seen during the excursion along the Psaho trail will remain in your memory for a long time.

Attractions along the route

The Psaho River filled the gorge with its waters after the earthquake.   Its channel are called the Wet Canyon. Its length is just over 2 kilometers. In some places, the canyon narrows to one and a half meters, and then gradually expands. The sun never completely illuminates the canyon, so you have to walk in the romantic twilight. On your way you will see many beautiful natural objects: mossy stones, rare plants, tangled vines and even karst caves, which once served as a dwelling for ancient people.

In the bed of the Psaho river there are a lot of waterfalls and quiet pools with clear water.  We recommend taking good athletic shoes with you to go through the canyon, because walking on stones is slippery and quite dangerous. Do not forget to drink water and keep track of time - never walk in unfamiliar areas in the dark. Remember that in the mountains it gets dark suddenly, and you can get lost. In such cases, do not be shy and call 911 - the team will surely find you.

The dry canyon is located a short distance from the river bed.   As the name implies, there is no water in the Dry Canyon. You can climb to a height of 30 meters along the canyon. Throughout the path you will be surrounded by walls of narrow corridors, done in solid rocks by nature itself. As a result of the earthquake, some deep-seated rocks were on the surface, therefore, passing along the Dry Canyon, you will see karst cavities and grottoes, dry stone rivers and stalactites.

In the village of Lesnoy, closest to the Easter trail, you can visit the Church of St. George the Victorious and the Trinity-St. George’s Convent.

Jeep tours

Getting to the canyons by car is difficult, it’s almost impossible. The road is rough, cobblestones stick out everywhere: the suspension simply cannot stand it, and the bottom will be wiped off. All this is nothing for jeeps and crossovers, the owners of which actively offer jeep tours along the Psaho trail.

You can sign up for a tour in the nearest city, Adler or Sochi. Departure is usually scheduled for early morning or lunch. You can choose any time, even in the  sunshine in the canyons it will be cool, there will be no discomfort.

Typically, the route also includes nearby attractions:

Buffalo Valley;

Source of blue clay;
Convent;
Ahshtyr Gorge.

The cost of the jeep tour  is about 1,500 rubles per person (entrance to the Psaho Canyon object is paid separately - 100 rubles).

Horse rides

Where the car does not pass, horses will go. These smart, specially trained animals will easily sweep along stony paths, carrying a  tourist.

Usually the routes from Adler are designed for 4 hours of riding, so the level of riding skill should be above average. Horseback riding along the Psaho trail from Adler is designed for 20 km of travel and one halt in the canyon, where you can swim, eat in a cozy restaurant and gain strength for the return trip.

A horse ride along the Psaho trail will cost at least 2,000 rubles per person (lunch at the restaurant and entrance to the canyon are paid separately).

How to get to the Psaho Trail

Getting to Psaho Canyons is a big problem for those who don’t like to walk a lot and don’t have an SUV (and for this reason there are so few tourists). The best solution is to rent a jeep in Adler or pick up a crossover via Yandex.Taxi or Uber applications.

If you nevertheless decide to hit the road on your own, then a minibus 131 goes from Adler train station. Get off at the stop "Batayskaya, 20"   and then walk   for about 2 km. The road is uphill, so it will take more than an hour. On google maps this stop is designated as "Raevskaya Street".
