Kamchatka Peninsula: Transportation and Accomodation

After you have read the previous article about the natural monuments of Kamchatka peninsula and maybe got interested in traveling there, it’s time for some information like how to get there, which cities exist there, what king of transport is being used there to get to the volcanoes and geysers from the cities and settlements ultimately where to sojourn at an inn and what to do there. Moreover, there are some tourist possibilities on the peninsula, except the simple sightseeing.

First of all, Kamchatka is situated very far on the east of Eurasia and it is nearer to Alaska, as to the Russian capital. If you are from the USA, in the summer you can make use of services of the air carrier Magadan Airlines, making flights Anchorage – Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in the summer season. If you are in Europe, the best variant is to travel by Moscow or St.Petersburg. The direct flights take place every day and you can choose between the companies of Aeroflot, Transaero, Domodedovo Airlines and Siberia. The time of the flight continues 9 hours. The flight by St. Petersburg is cheaper a little, but longer. It will take you 13 – 15 hours because of two landings. The air companies, making flights from St. Petersburg, are Pulkovo Airlines and Krasnoyarsk Airlines. It is also possible to get to Kamchatka by Krasnoyarsk and Vladivostok. In this case you would make use of the services of such air carriers as Krasnoyarsk Airlines and Vladivostok Air.

In the June, 2010 local air carrier of Kamchatintur has organized two charter flights for Japanese tourists. 86 travellers from Japan have used this service.

The biggest city, where an airport is situated, is Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. It is an administrative centre of the Kamchatka Territory and a large port. The international airport of Yelizovo is situated in 32 kilometers from this city, in the town of Yelizovo, so be ready for a long transfer by taxi.

The transportation system of Kamchatka consists of the buses, taxis and helicopters. There are no railways on Kamchatka. International transportation is carried out by water as well, especially international cruises.

There are 53 tour operators on Kamchatka Territory, and 18 of them are specialized in the area of international tourism providing special Kamchatka services. According to the sources, 5, 000 can be accommodated on Kamchatka at the same time. This includes 39 hotels, 74 special means of accommodation like tourist facilities, children's campuses, motels, guest houses, family and private hotels.

Hotels
The recreation centre Beryozka is situated in 30 km from the airport and in 60 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, in the Paratunka settlement. This place is famous by its unique nature and hot springs. The water of the Nizhne-Paratunskiye hot springs possesses different healing qualities. The buildings of the complex are made of timber, and smoking in the rooms is prohibited.

The hotel complex BelKamTur is the most comfortable one on the peninsula. It is situated also in Paratunka settlement. The complex is large and variety of services and rooms is more.

The hotel complex Antarius is also situated not far from Paratunka. It is more expensive, than Beryozka, but cheaper and smaller, as BelKamTur. Among its services is transfer to the airport.

The hotel Petropavlovsk is situated in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy. The restaurant of this comfortable hotel is designed in the style of Gzhel (blue pattern on the white background). The kitchen is mainly Russian. This hotel and Avacha hotel as well, are older and not so expensive, as the hotels near Paratunka.

Among the new tourist facilities the following ones should be mentioned: hostel of Baluy in the Lazo settlement of Milkovsky District, Kharchivo hunting and fishing seat in the Ust-Kamchatsky District on Yelovka River, recreation facility on Zhirovsky Termal springs, hunting and fishing seat on the Opala river (Ust-Bolsheretsky District), sports and tourist complex of Snezhnaya Dolina (Snow Valley) (accommodation possibility - 50 guests) and Kolumb recreation center (20 guests). Snezhnaya Dolina is oriented on American and European tourists, found of winter activities.

Additionally, an economy-class hotel of Chaika in the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky for 25 guests.

Moreover, the quantity and hopefully quality of eating facilities like restaurants and cafes increases last time.

Tours
There are many tours, offered by the Kamchatka operators. By the way, Kamchatka is more and more popular among tourists last time, especially foreign ones, they come even more often than the Russians. Last year 12 thousand foreign tourists came to Kamchatka, while amount of Russian tourists was twice less: 6 thousands. Tourists from America are the most frequent guests of volcano land. They came from 50 countries, but mainly they were Americans, Japanese, Europeans and Russians from Moscow and St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk Region and Far East. This is tied with geographical position of peninsula.

Walking tourism is one of the most popular services. It includes visiting the natural monuments of Kamchatka, like hot springs, picturesque landscapes and different expressions of volcanism. Secondly, one of the most popular services is climbing on volcanoes and mountains and rafting. These services demand preparation. There are even special hunting and fishing tours, within the bound of reason, of course. Alpine skiing is also developed there, because there are enough mountains and volcanoes to climb and ski. You are transported to the top of the mountain by helicopter. The helicopter can transport the tourists to the active volcanoes. It is not cheap, but unforgettable. Finally, the ecological tourism is also wide-spread on Kamchatka. For example, traditional traveling on the dog sleds.

All in all, Kamcatka is very far from everywhere. The services of it are not cheap, and partly it is because the large territories of the peninsula are natural reserves. Spending a lot of money on Kamchatka peninsula, you are helping the wild nature and vulcanology.
