Pereslavl-Zalesskiy: Old-Russian Color and Windsurfing
September 24, 2009 01:26

Pereslavl Zalessky is one of the cities of the Golden Ring, which are visited by thousands foreign and Russian tourists every year. It offers medieval churches, museums and Russian souvenirs as all such cities. But the Transfiguration cathedral of the city is the earliest of the survived ones in the north-eastern Rus, the museums of Pereslavl Zalessky are mainly private and they make their specialty in original and unexpected things. Except these traditional attractions, Pereslavl Zalessky is famous with such natural feature, as Pleshcheevo Lake, the centre of the Pleshcheevo Lake national reserve.

Architecture The tourists, interested in the history and architecture, can enjoy the sights of the fortifications, the earthworks of which still reach 10-12 meters. The walls made of stone didn’t survive because of the eventful history. The walls were built in the 12th century, like the Transfiguration Cathedral, which was built in 1157. It is not large, but its proportions are perfect. The church of the Peter, metropolitan of Moscow, which is situated not far from the ancient cathedral is an example of the 16th-century steepled churches, such buildings are very rare. The Goritsky monastery is turned into museum of fine arts, which disposes a very good collection of the Russian painting. The ensemble of the monastery demonstrates the Russian architecture of the 17 and 18th centuries. Troitskiy Danilov monastery is situated not far from Goritsky, and it is worth to visit because of its cathedral, devoted to the Holy Trinity. It was built in 1532 in the tight and sophisticated style of the 16th century, the interior, painted in the 1662 by the Kostroma artists Guriy Nikitin and Sila Savin is one of the best examples of the splendid Russian painting of the late Middle Ages, where the traditions of the Byzantine art are modified and mixed with the motifs of the European etchings and engravings. The oldest monastery is Nikitskiy; it is situated to the north of the city. It was founded in the 12th century by Nikita, who won glory of the wonder worker. The cathedral of the monastery, Nikitskiy, is the largest building of the 16th century. It is really huge. The massive walls and towers date from the 16th century too. They were built as fortifications and stood a siege in the 17th century.

Museums

The museums of the city are unusual, except the Pereslavl museum, which is like others. It is situated in the Goritskiy monastery and disposes a collection of the Russian painting. But if you are tired of the museums, visit the dendrological garden, or other museums, like the museum of the smoothing irons, the museum of kettles and teapots and the museum of the masks.

Nature: Pleshcheevo Lake

The lake of Pleshcheevo is one of the most beautiful lakes in the central Russia. It is a glacial one and has almost ideal oval shape. The maximal depth of the lake is 25 meters. It is fleet near the banks, which makes the lake popular between the windsurfers and kite surfers. If you don’t like such activities, you can observe the archaeological monuments like ancient settlement of Kleshchino, Neolithic settlement, the Blue stone, glacial boulder unusual color, which was an object of pre-Christian cults, even in the Middle Ages.
