For the first time in history the citizens of Russia crossed the Arctic Ocean from the Northern geographical pole to the coast of Canada with the help of dogs. That is how the first stage of the trip of Fyodor Konyuchov and Victor Simonov finished.
The expedition of Fyodor Konyuchov and Victor Simonov “Karelia – the Northern Pole – Greenland” started officially on the 3-rd of April, and on the 6-th of April the travelers went away from the Northern Pole with the team of 12 dogs.
The travelers haven’t managed yet to reach the coast of Greenland: they had to change the route because of ablation and to go to Canada. They will travel by the plane from there. “We managed to make the yank finally and go away from the drift ice to the fast ice and further to the coast of Canada. We had to pass several last kilometers on the thick hummocks, but the dogs went without any stops,” – reported Fyodor Konyuchov to the headquarters of the expedition.
Konyuchov and Simonov were on their way for 46 days, they passed 900 km of the drift ice of the Arctic Ocean. According to Konychov, they saved all dogs, none of them even hurt a leg. Having finished the first phase of the expedition, the travelers will start the second part. Further they plan to move to the coast of Greenland and start crossing the island by the biggest length, from the north to the south. The length of the route is more than 2500 km.
