Southern Urals Tourism Development

The program on tourism development has already been working in Chelyabinsk for several years.  As part of the program, they train guides, develop new routes and decide on how to promote the brands of Southern Urals.

Non-traditional forms of recreation, such as eco-, gastro-, industrial and scientific tourism now become more and more popular. However, same as before, regional authorities recognize ski resorts the most successful areas of the tourism industry.

Adzhigardak Ski Resort is one of the largest in the region. As of today, it has the capacity to accommodate up to a thousand people a day, but after the implementation of the investment project, calculated up to 2018, the resort capacity will reach almost five thousand tourists. The project stipulates several stages. The first one is infrastructure development and construction of the new network facilities. “Usually the season opens in mid-November and lasts until the end of March.  It is due to the fact that we have natural snow only. Of course there is more snow than in other resorts, but still not enough to extend the duration of the season. Owing to the support of the federal and regional governments, it is planned to build a water supply system. There will appear a pond, which will enable the installation of a snowmaking system. Accordingly, the season will start in early November and last until mid-April," Alexei Karelin, Commercial Director of Adzhigardak Ski Resort said.

Authorities decided to maintain this resort because of its location: nearly 30 million people live within a radius of 500 kilometers. Here come visitors from all over the Ural Oblast, Bashkortostan, Samara, Saratov, Kazan, Moscow and St. Petersburg. Adzhigardak is located on the ridge, which is famous for heavy snowfalls and mild climate. Besides the regular trails, there is a vast free ride area (off-piste). Last year there was built a new asphalt road, connecting the ski resort with the town. The construction became possible thanks to the participation in the federal program on the single industry towns’ support. The works co-financed by budget and private capital are proceeding.

Besides infrastructure development, the first phase of resort modernization is aimed at increasing the number of ski trails. On the northern slope of the mountain, the works on laying four trails have begun; the new chair lift has been installed and runs in a test mode. After that the works will be carried out on southern slope. As a result, the skiing area on the resort slopes will increase to nearly half. After the infrastructure will be reconstructed, about 50,000 square meters of resort's residential and commercial real estate will appear in 3 development areas near Ashoy.

"The volume of investments in the resort is great enough, and in order to make resort's development more intensive, we are now looking for a co-investor. At the same time we offer various forms of participation in our project, and depending on the wishes of co-investor we are ready for both, to share the aggregate project, and to offer the potential investor taking part in some specific projects. For example, in my opinion, the best thing is to participate in the construction of the cottage property, which we are planning to launch later this year," Yevgeny Gurevich, the project manager of Adzhigardak Ski Resort said. They are now trying to actively develop new sectors for the travelers.

The meteorite had hotted up the interest towards region. Mostly foreigners dream to visit the place where the celestial body fell down. A particular tourist route was established in 2013. It includes Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Chebarkul and two places where the meteorite fragments landed.
