Routes of the Great Northern Expedition
February 19, 2018 00:41

A project, uniting 39 subjects of the Russian Federation and eight countries, was presented in Irkutsk. This is the longest tourist route in the wake of the Great Northern Expedition of the 18th century under the leadership of Vitus Bering.

According to the author of the project, Ildar Mamatov, in the 18th century the expedition embraced the northern coast of Eurasia, the whole of Siberia, Kamchatka, the seas and lands of the Pacific Ocean, the coast of Japan, and discovered northwestern coasts of America unknown to scientists and seafarers.

Research and scientific discoveries were made in geographic, geological, physical, botanical, zoological and ethnographic directions. For the first time, a complete and detailed map of the Russian Empire was created.

A purpose of the project "Routes of the Great Northern Expedition" is the creation of a tourist route that repeats the paths of the Kamchatka expeditions of the 18th century - the First and Second Kamchatka expeditions and the Academic detachment led by Russian officers Vitus Bering and Alexei Chirikov.

Creators call the project as the longest tourist route in the country, which will link 39 regions of Russia and eight countries. An international starting point will be Paris and the finish point -  Alaska.
