Smokers in Sheremetyevo aren't Abused
December 15, 2010 14:22

Smoking in the airports and other public places irritates non-smokers, and the law is on their side. But there are thousands of people, who smokes, and this habit is not yet a crime. Discrimination of smokers is a big good topic to discuss, but this problem in the airports needs solving, because many people are afraid of flights and cigarette can help them to relax and keep their mind off nervous situation of oncoming flight. The people get rattled because of the flight delays, from the waiting process in the sterile area. Anyway, smokers need place for their habit without irritating others, and Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow, pretending to be modern but passengers friendly as well has opened comfortable smoking lounges in its new Terminal E.

Three new lounges for smoking are situated in Terminal E, on the third floor of the sterile area. Smoking lounges are equipped with modern ventilation and air cleaning systems and do not contain any inflammable things to provide safety. Smoking areas are all the time under control of airport staff. Tobacco smoke doesn't disturb other non-smoking people, waiting for a flight. Original design lets the smokers to spend their time awaiting a flight with comfort as well. Smoking lounges like these exist in the airports of Munich, Bali, Geneva, Zurich, Athens and others.

Comfortable smoking areas were opened in the airport of Sheremetyevo for the first time in 2008 (Terminal C). Moreover, there are 23 easy-to-detect places for smokers where they can enjoy their pipes, cigars and cigarettes in friendly atmosphere of smoking lounge in the Terminal F, which is connected with Terminal E.

The airport respects healthy life style but is loyal to all its clients with their different customs. A few years ago smoking was allowed in the toilets in the zone after passport control, and smoke smell was felt even in duty-free shops. In the sterile zones in different airports there were two alternatives: smoking in the toilets to displeasure of non-smokers and children or strictly prohibition of smoking in the sterile zone to disappointment of smokers. Smoking zones in the toilets were situated between the entrance and cabins and weren't comfortable at all. The worst thing was that all the people used the toilets, regardless to their attitude towards smoking. The second step was to ban smoking, but it also was not a good way out: all the flights of Aeroflot air company, first-rate Russian air carrier based in Sheremetyevo are announced as nonsmoking.

Domodedovo, the biggest international airport in Russia on the south-east from Moscow and the main competitor of Sheremetyevo has solved this problem by organization of smoking room in the sterile zone for international flights and with smoking places provided with ozone umbrellas in the departure zone of domestic air services and in the customs surveillance zone in the arrival area for international flights.

All in all, smoking passengers have their right to smoke in the airport, because it is not a crime but one of the weaknesses incident to human nature, and such people can await their needs to be met, much less it is possible.
