Renting Car in Russia
May 25, 2011 13:25

There are many reasons to rent a car, especially when you are a tourist and want to be independent in your movement. In Russia this service is represented by both international networks and Russian companies. At the moment, renting cars is available in all big cities of Russia from Moscow and St. Petersburg to Sochi. Range of services is really wide. You can rent a car with a driver, and it will be something like long-term taxi, you can rent different classes of cars, take the car from one of company's parkings or even arrange for the car to be in a place you point out. You can drive within the city and to another region, or even abroad. Terms of rent are also different depending on the company. Usually they are described on the web-site. As soon as choice is wide, there are some risks they can trade on your credulity. We touch some details you should note to avoid bad service.

Foreigners, who want to rent a car without driver should have their international driving license, pass and money: cash or credit card. Person, renting a car should correspond with some criteria almost the same in all companies: age and driving experience. Usually you should be older than 20 and have driving experience not less than a year. Prices can depend on these criteria: young drivers pay more. There are some not so obvious moments which can make you pay more if you don't mention them in time:

1. Time you take and return the car. Renting cars in Moscow usually means precise time you'll use the vehicle. Check time well signing your rent agreement, in order to avoid fines for exceeding time. Moscow traffic jams don't let to plan your time precisely, so most companies provide free hours of waiting. For example, if you return a car an hour later, you pay no extra money, if you are late more than 5 hours, you pay for one more day.

2. The car must be insured (compulsory civil liability motor-vehicle insurance or fully comprehensive automobile insurance). This is very important when you rent a car without driver. Some companies remove some points from insurance to make it cheaper. You may have to pay for damage caused by third persons. However, if the insurance is full, you should not be anxious if something happens with the car: insurance company will pay for maintenance.

3. Examine the car good, if it has some hidden damages, not listed in the agreement. Some companies can "forget" to include a few into the list of damages and defects the agreement includes. You risk to pay for superficial body damage you haven't noticed.

4. You can meet with solicitation, returning the car. All agreements include point about that you should wash the car before returning. If you did not have a possibility, you can do it directly on company's parking, and this service is much more expensive than car wash in neighboring street. The problem is that when you return fresh-washed car, the manager can find it dirty and you will have to wash it once again on another price, at company's washbay.

5. Some small details are paid extra. Among them - in-car navigation device and in some cases even Stereo.

It is ridiculous, biucar renting in Moscow is a very old business, appeared first time almost 50 years ago. It was expensive, illegal (Soviet laws did not encourage free enterprises) and that's why did not exist long until revival in 2001. Now such business is very profitable. Renting cars in contemporary Russia is an industry. We advice you to choose carefully and prefer old companies with reasonable, but not too low prices.
