Sunny Magadan is famous for its gold fields and for that the people, working at the golden fields and other different natural deposits were prisoners of Soviet time, political as well. The climate of the region is very hard, so sometimes working on the fields and road making were something like annihilation. This gloomy period finished in 1950-s, and only the monument "Mask of Sorrow" reminds us of that times.

The monument is a crying human face, and tears are running from its left eye. Tears are little masks. On the reverse side of the monument crying women and beheaded man on a cross are presented. The right eye is a grilled window. Inside there is a typical prison cell of 1930-50-s. Sculptor is Ernst Neizvestny, architector - Kamil Kazaev. Monument was opened on the June, 12, 1996.

Magadan is available by air. The air companies Transaero and Aeroflot carry out regular flights Moscow-Magadan. The airport is called Sokol and it is the biggest one on the Russian North-East.
