The region is situated on the border of Ural and Siberia in the encatchment area of the rivers Tobol and Iset. Officially it belongs to the Ural Federal District and to the Ural economical region as well. The Kurgan Region occupies a territory about 71, 5 thousand square kilometers.

The population is multi-ethnic, but the Russians and the Tartars seem to dominate quantitatively. The only one standing body of the legislative power in the region is The Kurgan provincial Duma. The executive power belongs to the governor. The sitting governor, Oleg Bogomolov, is holding this elective post for the third time.

Inside of the city there are three large lakes that offer their nice shores for walking. Kurgan has kept the lay-out of streets that has been there for over two hundred years and its architecture still has a delicate tinting of the past centuries.

The trans-Siberian Railroad is the most optimal way to get there. The train Number 090Y leaves from Moscow at 5.48 p.m. from Kazansky railway station, goes one and a half days and reaches Kurgan at 4.15 a.m.
