How to Get to Sochi Airport
September 12, 2016 11:31

(Source: http://divan-s.ru/page)

If you bother to take the plane from any Moscow airport to the city of Sochi, you will definitely never regret about it. This town is rather small, though one of the longest settlements in the world – it is stretched along the Black sea coast for about 150 km. Sochi is unique for its astonishing nature and spa facilities – few places on our planet can boast to have both the seaside and the mountains (the Caucasus – famous mountain system – is as little as sixty km away from the sea).

Sochi is Russian New Zealand, except that it is not an island and not thousands km away from the Old World and there are no dangerous man-eating sharks in the sea and poisonous shakes and… ok, Sochi is much better than New Zealand. Humid subtropical zone forms perfect climate – hot and sunny summers for suntan lovers and mild winters for mad-for-mountain-skiing ones. Water in the Black sea is known to have chemical composition almost similar to human blood – you can even drink it if you want to know how blood tastes (just kidding). However, you won’t have to close your eyes while swimming and diving, the water won’t make them sore as Mediterranean seawater surely would. The famous Russian ski resort Krasnaya Polyana is situated near Sochi – come there for downhill and snowboarding, heli-ski and freeride – this place is paradise for winter vacations. The town of Sochi is located near one of the largest Russia’s reserve parks. Its suburbs are a treasury of rare plant and animal species. You can find ancient gnarled yews and boxtrees, which are as old as eight hundred years or even more. Of course they are not sequoias, but their long mossy branches look fascinating – it’s like traveling in time to the age of dinosaurs and other strange creatures.

How to get there:

Many air carriers offer the transfer from Moscow to Sochi – you can choose the airport and the time of flight that is convenient to you. Round trip economy prices start from 5600 rubles (about $200). Flight time is 1 hour 50 minutes, and most of this time is spent over water. If you want a glimpse of Russia, you can take the daily 104 or 102 train from Kazansky railway station and enjoy about 27 hours of Russian routine life. But taking the train won’t save you much money – separate compartment costs the same as economy air ticket, and other variants are not for those who want a comfortable journey – quite an experience.

Air

Flights to/from Sochi are much more frequent from May to October. There are six to nine daily flights to/from Moscow (2,5 hours), bur from November to April only a few a week. Other services include St. Petersburg (3 hours), Tbilisi (1 hour), and Yerevan (1,5 hours) – several times a week in high season. There are also flight to/from Istanbul (Turkey).

Train

There are several trains a day between Sochi and Moscow (36-38 hours) via Rostov-on-Don. Once a week there is a train to Odesa (Ukraine) – 39 hours. ON even-numbered days there is a train to Krasnodar (5 hours), and on odd-numbered days to Vladikavkaz (17 hours) with a stop at Mineralnye Vody (13 hours). Suburban trains run daily along the coast to Tuapse.

Bus

Bus services include twice-daily buses to Krasnodar (8 hours), daily buses to Novorossiysk (9 hours), Stavropol (14 hours) and Kislovodsk (17 hours).

Car

It’s about 150km from Sochi to Sukhumi, and 650km to Tbilisi.

Boat

Sochi is a port of call for the irregular passenger ferries and hydrofoils. A hydrofoil leaves Sochi for Batumi (Georgia) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday (4 hours) and returns on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. To Trabzon in Turkey a hydrofoil leaves 6 times a week (5-6 hours). A passenger ferry makes a two day sale to Istanbul once a week, leaving Sochi on Monday and arriving in Istanbul on Wednesday. The ferry leaves Istanbul on Friday and returns to Sochi on Sunday.
