Child-friendly Airlines in Russia
January 31, 2008 15:51

Not always parents can bring their child to a remote city spend a holiday with his grandparents. Does this mean that their little son or daughter will have to spend their holiday at home? According to the Russian laws children can travel alone since they turn 12, but is it possible to send a 5-year-old child to Siberia alone, without being accompanied by an adult? Some Russian airlines can provide their customers with such opportunity.

Aeroflot

The largest Russian air carrier Aeroflot is ready to take on responsibility for a child 5-12 years old. Although older children are allowed to travel alone, it is possible to ask the airline staff to accompany them to the destination.

When buying the plane ticket, parents must provide written consent. Although extra care for the child is not supposed to be extra paid, parents will have to pay the full cost of the plane ticket, without any discounts for children.

It is possible to send the child abroad or somewhere within the country. The child gets parted from his parents at the check-in counter, and from now on the airline is responsible for him. The airline staff will accompany the child to the plane where there are stewards to look after him. In order not to let the child get bored, stewards will hand him a set of markers and a colouring book.

When the plane arrives to the destination, a representative of the airline will hand the child over a person who meets him after the meeting side shows their passport. When buying an air ticket for the child, parents are obliged to guarantee that there will be someone to meet the child and that they are ready to compensate for damage that the child can cause during the flight.

Transaero

The same rules exist in Transaero – another large Russian airline. The air carrier is ready to take up to 5 unaccompanied children aboard. They also promise to entertain the little passenger during the flight and to present him with a special rucksack with surprises. When ordering a ticket it is possible to choose any menu for the child. Transfer flights are also available to children, but all these are available with regular flights only, not charter.

S7 Airlines

Sending the child with S7 Airlines is also possible; besides, this airline asks to provide less papers that the previous two air carriers. However, here no one is going to make the child busy or entertain him during the flight as well as provide him with any special menu. At the same time the airline staff clarifies that for extra 150 roubles parents can order something special beforehand. With S7 Airlines unaccompanied 5-12-year-old children can fly only on regular flights.

Air carrier Russia does not let little children travel alone within the country and agrees to accompany them only on flights abroad. Airline Sky Express leaves no chances for travelling alone to 5-12-year-old children at all.

Therefore, in Russia a child can fly alone within the country or abroad. It all depends on the domestic rules of different airlines.
