There are infinitely many people and events associated with Ryazan oblast, both famous and half-forgotten. All of them gradually become a “reason” for holidays and festivals.
The nearest festival is “The Battle of the Vozha River” from August 8 to 12. There was a battle that marked the beginning of the liberation of Russia from Mongol-Tatar yoke not far from the ancient Glebovo-Gorodoshche village in 1378. The history “looped back”. The festival of historical reconstruction “The Battle of the Vozha River” is held annually, and each year it attracts more spectators and participants.
Generally, the visit to Konstantinovo, the native village of Sergei Esenin, is almost obligatory for all tourist routes of Ryazan oblast. But the main events dedicated to the birthday of the poet take place in October. The All-Russian Esenin's Poetry Festival traditionally begins with “Konstantinovskaya Fair” and continues with the literary and musical programs - with poems and songs with the lyrics from Esenin’s poems. You can also go to Ryazan oblast without any reason to follow Paustovsky through Meshcherskaya side, or to the grave of the hero of World War of 1812, Count Osterman-Tolstoy, in Krasnoe village.
Workshops, pottery, creation of folk dolls, study of folk costumes, weaving of colored lace - in this regard Ryazan oblast is a real goldmine of skills. The main points of this program are Ryazan, Skopin and Mikhailov. In Ryazan museums you will see the best examples of Russian art, and being inspired by them you will probably try to create something with your own hands.
You can master flexible clay that is mined on Miloslavsky Open Mine in Skopin at the local factory of art ceramics where the extremely popular workshops are conducted. Skopinskaya factory is famous worldwide, and once in every three years it becomes the venue for the International Festival of Pottery. Mikhailovo colored lace is the only one of this kind in Russia, so it will be difficult to learn this unique art at a workshop, but at least you can try. In any case you are sure to see how the specialists of “Truzhenitsa” factory in Mikhailovo work and bring home some samples of their work.
Museums.
Two Ryazan Museum deserve to be mentioned separately – it is worth to go to Ryazan in order to see them. “The Academician Ivan Petrovich Pavlov was born and lived here from 1849 to 1870” - the plaque on one of the oldest houses in Ryazan says. The house of the first Russian Nobel Prize winner does not look a shabby museum space - almost all exhibits are preserved in their original from, as if the eccentric academician Ivan Petrovich has just left the building. In addition to the basic tours, the museum holds traditional gorodki tournaments, but in order to visit them you should apply in advance.
High art is presented in the “Ryazan Tretyakov Gallery” which is officially named Ryazan State Regional Art Museum named after I.P. Pozhalostin. This is one of the richest museums in Russia with the collection of more than 12,000 original works of Russian and Western European artists of XV-XX centuries. It is the case when the names speak for themselves: Borovikovskiy, Tropinin, Aivazovsky, Repin, Serov, Benois, Somov, Guardi, Venetsianov, Kramskoy, Savrasov, Champaigne, Vouet ... And, of course, these is not the whole list of reasons for visiting Ryazan oblast.
