CTO Regime Of Elbrus
June 7, 2015 16:29

Elbrus is the highest mountain in Russia. Its western peak has a height of 5642 m, eastern one - 5621 m. Elbrus is a cone of a dead volcano on a high pedestal of granite and schists. The Elbrus region is a mountainous region of Russia, a real paradise for ski fans or adventurers. The mountains are beautiful at any time of year, but in early spring it is unsafe there - glaciers begin to melt, and therefore the risk of avalanches increases.

The regime of CTO (counter-terrorist operation) in the Elbrus region was canceled in November 2011. It lasted eight months, from February 2011.

During the CTO tourists were not allowed to go to the Elbrus region, they were sent back at the checkpoint in the Baksanskoe Gorge.

The eight months of an actual blockade greatly damaged the Elbrus tourism sector - hotels were empty, people were out of work, the construction of new facilities was frozen. The introduction of CTO was covered in the mass media in great detail, but the cancellation of the regime stayed almost unnoticed.

That is why we draw your attention to the fact that the regime of CTO is actually canceled, the third line of cableway is restored, tourists can freely come to the Elbrus region. There is only one checkpoint left in the gorge where the documents are checked. But no one stops tourists, there are no problems with traveling to the Elbrus region.

The situation in the area is calm. It also worth mentioning that tourists are always treated very politely and friendly in the Elbrus region, because their presence means money for those who work here.
