The town of Sevsk is one of the oldest in the Bryansk region. It was first mentioned in chronicles in 1146. Then it was a part of the Chernigov-Seversk land.

In the middle of XVII century the fortress of Sevsk became a part of the system of defensive “watchtowers” along the south-eastern borders. In the course of time Sevsk also became known as a large shopping centre not only in Russia, but also in the West.

After 1683 the town has grown significantly due to the inflow of archers deported here from Moscow after the riots. In XVIII century the defensive value of Sevsk as a border town decrease because of the consistent expansion of Russian territories. In the end of XVII century silver coins called “Sevsk Czechs” were made in Sevsk.

The largest congestion of remnants of mammoths in the European part of Russia was found in Sevsk. Moderate continental climate is characterized by warm summers and mild winters with stable snow cover, an average temperature of -9 degrees in winter and +19 degrees in summer. If you want to visit this place, is better to choose summer and early autumn, because ground frosts may happen even in May.
