Altai Republik: Gorno-Altaisk

Gorno-Altaisk is the only inhabited locality of Altai with the status of a town.

The Church of the Transfiguration is the first Orthodox cathedral of the capital of Altai. It was built only in 1988-1991.

The Altai name of the State Assembly is El Kurultai, which is translated as “the meeting of the leaders of nomadic tribes”. Local peculiarities. The Day of the Town of Gorno-Altaisk is celebrated in early September. Every year on January 31 they celebrate Chaga-Bayram - Altai New Year - in the administrative centre of the republic. The celebration takes place in the heart of the town – at the Lenina Square, where the theatrical and musical groups perform, games and sports events are held. What to bring from Gorno-Altaisk.

Traditional local souvenirs: musical instruments topshur and comus, hand-made syrmaki carpets, blankets of goat hair, pine nuts, stone figures, amulets. They can be purchased in souvenir shops and stores in the town local history museum.

Celebrities. Andrei Anokhin is a scientist-ethnographer, translator. He studied folk songs in the republic. His name was given to the main museum of Gorno-Altaisk. Nikolai Chevalkov is the Altai self-taught artist. His works have not been recognized by official authorities, so there are almost no works of the master left. However, some of them can be seen in the town local history museum.
