Terskol Mountains
December 4, 2015 02:21

The name Terskol belongs both to the gorge and the glacier, as well as the river flowing from it, but for tourists Terskol is mainly the village in the Baksanskoe Gorge, the administrative centre of the recreational area of the Elbrus region.

It is built at an altitude of about 2100 meters above the sea level. A bit below, at an altitude of 2000 meters, there is the Cheget Meadow at the foot of the Cheget Mountain. Above this the Azau Meadow is located from where lifts lead to Elbrus. Unlike the purely hotel and tourist Azau, Terskol is a real village with permanent residents. It is the highest located alpine village in the Elbrus region.

There are no architectural and historical attractions in Terskol, and there is no need for them - the beauty of the mountains is so mesmerizing that you just forget about the “civilization”. There is one more important monument – to those who died on the slopes of the Elbrus Mountain in the Great Patriotic War. It is erected on a hill a hundred meters below the bus station.

On May 9, 2012 the remains of eight Soviet soldiers found by a group of searchers at an altitude of 4000 meters near Gara-Bashi (the slope of the Elbrus Mountain) in August 2011 were solemnly buried here.
