In the Gorodovikovsky region of Kalmykia the good conditions for hunting and fishing are provided by nature. People come here for holidays from all over Russia. The Gorodovikovsky Region is included in the western part of the tourist zone of Kalmykia, where the most interesting are the water bodies of Kuma-Manych mountain trench.
HISTORY
The Gorodovikovsky region is formed in the territory of Bolshederbetovsky nomad camp founded in 1788 due to division of Derbetovsky nomad camp into two parts. In 1872, the Kalmyks of the nomad camp founded a settlement of Bashanta - actual Gorodovikovsk. The name comes from the Mongolian word "Baishin" that means "home". The founder is of Bashanta is considered to be the last owner of Bolshederbetovsky nomad camp, Noion Michael Gakhaev.
A descendant of the oldest Kalmyk family was a member of Russian-Turkish war, Knight of the Order of St. George, honorary guardian of public schools. Since 1909, the rate of Bashanta was an administrative center of Bolshederbetovsky nomad camp. In 1930, in connection with the discontinuation of nomad camps and the transfer to the regional division, it became the center of the Western region. From 1943 to 1957 the Western District was part of the Rostov region, but then it was returned to Kalmykia. In 1960 it was renamed to Gorodovikovsk. Bashanta rate in 1938 became an urban-type settlement. In 1971 Bashanta received the city status and a new name of Gorodovikovsk, in honor of Hero of the Soviet Union, Colonel General Gorodovikov Oka (1879-1960). During World War II, he was the commander and deputy commander of the cavalry of the Soviet Army.
