In October 1889 a sawmill named by the Merchant Gubin was opened under Resolution of the construction department of the Kazan government in the place called Lopatynskaya Volozhka (or Lopatinsky backwater).

In 1929, on the basis of the nationalized factory a Woodworking Plant "Zarya" was established. By 1935, in Lopatinskaya Volozhka a working village Lopatino, further Volzhsk, grew. In 1938, near the village Mari Paper Mill (Marbumkombinat) was built and Lopatin's population grew to 18 000 people, and in 1940 the village changed the name and became a city.

Pulp and Paper Mill is now the main enterprise in Volzhsk today. Besides the plant, the city is known for its hockey team "Ariada-Akpars" serving in the Premier League (it is quite unusual for a city with a population of 55 ths. people) and the city is famous by the festival of art song "Mamakabo", dedicated to the memory of the local native, poet and musician Andrei Baranov.
