The Manor Of Bryanchaninovs
November 17, 2016 00:29

Pokrovskoe is the family seat of the famous noble family of Bryanchaninovs. Its representatives were the leaders of the county nobility, trustees of schools and hospitals. Bryanchaninovs provided Russia with truly outstanding people. They include: the legendary boyar Brenko, who, according to the legend, put on the armor of the Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy during the Battle of Kulikov and died for him; Saint Ignatiy (Dmitry Bryanchaninov during his life), the Bishop, theologian, writer, the author of the famous work “Ascetic Experience”. In 1988 he was canonized.

The manor of Bryanchaninovs is called one of the best in Russia. It was built in the years 1809-1810, and the manor’s Intercession Church - in 1811. The house project was initially developed in 1810 by the architect A. Sapozhnikov. A new project for the restructuring of the manor was prepared in 1820 by the architect A. Kutepov.

The main manor house was built in the style of early classicism. It strikes by its external fragility and elegant stucco on the outside and inside of the building. The mezzanine and balcony balustrade are supported by Corinthian columns. The interior decoration was made with taste and elegance. A rich library of the hosts joined the Vologda Public Library Foundation in 1919. The house adjoins a regular park created in the French style. It is famous for its lime avenues designed in the shape of a cross.

The Church of the Intercession built in 1811 stands to the east of the house. Next to the church there is an ancestral graveyard of Bryanchaninovs. The tombstone of the first owner of the estate has survived – it was Aleksandr Semenovich Brianchaninov (1784-1875), the leader of the Vologda provincial nobility and a page-boy of the Emperor Paul I in his youth.
