Vyshny Volochyok: Local Pecularities
December 2, 2016 17:10

The settlement on the place of the modern Vyshny  Volochyok was founded in 1437.

In 1703 Peter I decided to lay a canals system through the town, which was completed in 1708.

Linguists are still arguing about spelling: “Vyshny Volochok” or “Vyshny Volochyok”. Despite the fact that a number of dictionaries recommended to write the name of the town with the “o”, this name is written with ”yo” on the official web site of the municipality.

An interesting feature of Vyshny Volochyok is the fact that it has one traffic light installed in the whole town.

Vyshny Volochyok is famous for its canals that are a perfect fit to the picturesque nature of the Valdai Hills. A visit to the town without a walk through the channels would be incomplete. You can rent a boat or a catamaran at the boat station, near the place where Tveretsky canal begins. A cypress shrub grows close to the Serdyukov’s Estate which lies on the banks of the Vyshnevolotsky water reservoir on the western outskirts of the town. They say it was planted by Peter I himself during his visit to these places. Unfortunately, it is not so easy to get in Kazansky Monastery. The monastery opens its doors only during the service on Saturday nights and Sunday mornings.
