The town was founded in order to protect Russian borders after the conquest of Kazan by Ivan the Terrible.

The guarding settlement on the place of the modern Ardatov was founded in the 16th century for the protection of the Russian borders after the conquest of Kazan by Ivan the Terrible. In 1780 the settlement got the status of a town.

The residents of the town participated in the rebellion led by Pugachev. The rebels joined the detachment of Pugachev whose way after the siege of Kazan was going through Ardatov.
