History And Legends Of Bolkhov

 The settlement on the place of modern Bolkhov was founded in XIII century. In XVI century Bolkhov was mentioned in historical documents as a fortification.

The peak of the town’s development fell to the middle of XIX century, when leather industry began to develop in Bolkhov. The latest buildings in Bolkhov date back to the end of the 19th century.

There are no modern buildings in the town. The first settlement on the place of the present Bolkhov emerged at the beginning of the first millennium AD. The name of the Monastery of Optina is associated with the word “common” - the monastery originally had both male and female parts.

Legends

According to a legend, Ivan the Terrible himself was married in one of the cathedrals of Bolkhov.
