Ural Miass

 Miass is a city at the foot of the mountains of the Southern Urals, in the immediate vicinity of the Ilmen Nature Reserve. The Ilmen Festival of Author’s Song organized by Oleg Mityaev Foundation is held near Miass every summer.

This is one of the largest bard’s sites in Russia gathering authors-performers from all over the country. The festival traditionally lasts for three days, during which time it is visited by more than 40 thousand people. Miass was founded in 1773 around the local metal smelting plant. The peak of the city’ development fell to the middle of XIX century, during that time it was the centre of trade and gold mining.

The word “miass” came to Russian language from Bashkir. Its exact meaning is unknown. According to one of the versions “as” means “water”. About 50 sites of the ancient man were found on the territory of the Ilmen Nature Reserve. According to one version, the name of the Ilmensky Park goes back to the Bashkir language and is translated as “harmless”, according to another version, it’s a proper name belonging to a certain tribe, and possibly to one person, after whom the Ilmen Ridge and the Ilmenskoe Lake were later named.
