The Tower Of Kurt And Tag
June 17, 2017 00:31

An ancient tower rises in the village of Uallagsykh, to the south of the settlement of Dallagkau, on the high Khakun mountain. It is called the tower of Kurt and Tag and it is a real pearl of the Kurtatinskoe Gorge.

The ancient building not only attracts tourists, but it is also a family castle for the great number of Ossetians. According to legend, the castle was built by Kurt and Tag (the accent in both names falls to the last syllable) - two brothers who are revered as the founders of the Kurtatinsky and Tagaursky communities.

According to genealogy, these brothers are ancestors of more than a hundred families of North Ossetia. Next to the surviving tower there are the ruins of the second battle tower and yet another building - presumably, a residential one. The entire complex is in an emergency condition and, according to the recent conclusion of the architect-restorer V. A. Kuzmin, “requires urgent works on its strengthening and conservation”. If this is not done, numerous cracks and rock avalanches will ruin the tower - it will just collapse, just like the second tower of the castle has collapsed.

The project “Lost Ossetia” has announced collection of funds for the restoration of the monument and made an appeal to the residents of the republic.
