An ancient Paleolithic man site named Deering-Yuryakh was discovered on a high mountain near Elanka, on the opposite bank of the Lena River, in September 1982.

The most ancient labor tools on Earth - pebble choppers - were found during the archaeological excavations in the area of Deering-Yuryakh. Before that silicon tools of this kind with the traces of human processing were discovered only in Africa which is considered the ancestral home of mankind.

A total of more than 4,500 items were found during the archaeological expedition, many of them turned out to be “anvils” marked by numerous strokes, as well as “failed” products of primeval masters.

The items found during the excavations can be seen in the museums of Yakutsk. Judging by the data obtained by the Academician Yurii Mochanov, the age of the Deering-Yuryakh site is more than three million years. However, the exact dating of the Deering-Yuryakh site is still being discussed.
