Samara Walking Route: Main Attractions
April 26, 2018 11:26

The Kuibysheva Square in Samara is not just the main city square, but the largest square in Russia and the second largest square in Europe. This is the favorite promenade of the city residents, and for tourists this place is the key point of the historic centre of Samara.

All the main attractions of the Samara centre – Stalin’s Bunker, the Samara Drama Theatre, the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, etc. – are situated near the square, within a walking distance. Volga is also very close to the square: ten minutes of slow walking.

The houses on Chapaevskaya Street bordering the square from the side of Volga seem quite small from the central part of the square. The enormous austere building of the Samara Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre stands on the opposite side. The theatre (which was earlier the Palace of Culture) was built on the site of the main city cathedral that had been blown up - the Samara Cathedral of Christ the Savior.

The square was also called “Sobornaya” (“Cathedral Square”), and people have talked about the return of the square’s historical name in recent years. The present name is due to the monument to the famous revolutionary Valerian Vladimirovich Kuibyshev, the organizer of Soviet industry: it stands in front of the theatre.
